This website was established to document marine mammal stranding events in Indonesia, particularly the cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and the dugong. The website is composed mainly in English to attract international readership. We do have an information page dedicated to Indonesian, non-English speaking readers. Click here to access that page. Scroll down for more info.

We need annual funding for our online database management and tactical funds to dispatch first responders and vets to stranding events (particularly the live stranding events). Your donation is very much appreciated; no amount is too small. Please click here for donation. Thank you!

Terima kasih atas sumbangan Anda.

Mission Statement

This stranding website is created to compile, analyse and present marine mammal stranding events in Indonesia in a systematic and easy-to-use manner. Although the domain name of this website contains only "whale", this website documents any stranding events involving whales, dolphins and the dugongs in Indonesia.

We always try to credit the original source of our stranding data and check to ensure that the species identification is correct. However, do contact us if you find errors in this website, e.g., if we did not acknowledge the source correctly or if we incorrectly identified the species.

Since first going online in January 2013, the website has become a vessel for marine mammal stranding community in Indonesia to interact. These days we see Whale Stranding Indonesia (WSI) not just as an online database, but also as a communication platform for anyone concerned about marine mammal stranding issues.  Although WSI is not an NGO nor a government institution, WSI is working collaboratively with the Indonesian government, in particular the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and other parties to ensure the future of marine wildlife and the people of this archipelago.

Make sure to like us on Facebook, or join our Twitter feed for updates (although we have more presence on Facebook than Twitter due to human resource shortage at the moment).

Disclaimer

Stranding data is collected and verified by volunteers and scientists on site, supported by a network of supporters across the globe. We expose a portion of the data for free online, and we generally encourage non-commercial use of data, but it has to be with our written permission. You're welcome to directly use the data for meeting or coordination purposes, but please acknowledge "Whale Stranding Indonesia" as the source. If the data is to be used for publications or conference presentations (PPT, poster, etc.), please contact us PRIOR to the data being used at strandingindonesia@gmail.com or drop us a message at Facebook for written permission.
