The US National Marine Animal Health and Stranding Response Conference that I attended in early September (6-9 Sept 2016) was not the first of its kind that I attended at a national level, but it was certainly the most impressive one. My sincere thanks to International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) for their generous contributions so that I could attend this event, and for NOAA for extending the invitation to me. The conference enabled me to learn many things to apply to Indonesia’s own national marine mammal stranding network. The followings are lessons I learned during some sessions of the conference. Granted, I couldn’t attend all sessions as much as I wanted to. For instance, given my limited medical/veterinarian knowledge, I only attended some veterinary sessions that my Indonesian vet colleagues would have not missed for the world. However, what I’ve learned from the sessions I did attend was a treasure. The followings are things that I learned the most during the conference, not necessarily in the order of magnitude nor importance. (Click here to read the whole blog)

Mustika is going to the USA this weekend to attend the US Marine Animal Health and Stranding Network Conference in West Virginia, 6-9 Sept 2016, organised by NOAA Fisheries. Thanks to NOAA for extending the invitation to Mustika, and to IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) for supporting the airfare, accommodation and registration for the conference. Mustika will present a poster showcasing the marine mammal stranding response progress in Indonesia from 2004-2016. The poster can be found here. The poster highlight is that until now, the whole national stranding team has trained more than 1,000 (yes, a thousand) first responders at about 33 sites in the country. It is an achievement indeed for this large archipelagic nation, one that cannot be achieved just by one institution/person doing this on their own. In short, it's an applause for us all.
It occurred to us yesterday that some visitors might find this website quiet and lack of excitement going. Well, that cannot be farther from truth, because up at the Facebook page, we are very active. We try to post once a week during no-stranding times. When there are strandings, we will post frequently, including the updates, in English and Indonesian. But some visitors might only visit this website or the Facebook page, hence do not see the whole picture.
Thus, we have included Facebook feed on the frontpage, a comment section (still trial, 3rd party app), and also a gallery. We will not post all photos here; that's what the Facebook page is for. However, the gallery is hoped to capture the essence of our activities. Since this website is largely a voluntary effort, it will be difficult to maintain the blog in both English and Indonesian. Attempts will be made to make bilingual posts whenever possible, but it will mainly be in English. Thanks for your understanding. Demikian, terima kasih. |
